we had the opportunity to visit ground zero eight years ago in september, just after the 12th anniversary of 9/11 and it was a moving experience.  the waterfalls and the reflecting pools that sit within the footprints of where the twin towers once stood are a lovely tribute, and the freedom tower is quite a sight to behold.  our thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who lost a loved one on this day 24 years ago.

an anniversary trip to nyc

i took a trip into nyc on saturday with my parents to celebrate my parents' anniversary.  the weather in the city was gorgeous on saturday, and it was a really nice day!

we headed into the city to walk around, see the broadway musical tootsie, have dinner at chai thai kitchen, and finish off the day with dessert at bibble and sip.

nyc: the museum at fit

we had a great time in nyc on saturday celebrating my dad's birthday.  the first thing we did when we arrived in nyc in the morning was head down to the museum at fit.  we had never been there before, and were pleasantly surprised to find out that admission was free!

while we were at the museum, we checked out both current exhibitions: fashion unraveled and pink.  it was really interesting to see all of the outfits up close.  if you're looking for a free activity in nyc to pass some time, i'd definitely recommend checking it out.

a birthday nyc trip!

we didn't limit my dad's birthday celebrations to one day this year.  instead, we spent the whole weekend celebrating.  before celebrating at our house on sunday, we took a trip to nyc on saturday!

we spent the day in the city.  we had a yummy lunch at brgr followed by a tasty doughnut from doughnut plant in chelsea, saw the play that goes wrong on broadway, and then had a great dinner at chai thai kitchen in midtown.

saturday in nyc

saturday was one of those super rare occurrences when both of us didn't have work and there were no shows happening.  we made the last-minute decision late on friday night to take a trip into nyc on saturday for a little date together.  we haven't seen each other in so long because our schedules have been crazy and we feel like we haven't had a chance to do anything fun together in a long time, so it was really nice to be able to escape to our favorite city together for a few hours on saturday.

the weather was absolutely perfect, so we decided to skip the subway and walk everywhere all day (we walked over 175 blocks).  we spent the morning down in soho walking around and taking in the city.  while we were in soho, we visited the first-ever united states birkenstock store!  i've been a birkenstock lover for the past 15 years, so it was really exciting to shop in the first u.s. store (the company is based in germany).  i was on the hunt for a certain type of birkenstocks and i found them there, so i was thrilled.  the store didn't officially open until 2 days later on october 1st, so it was fun to be one of the first people in there!  (i'll share more on my new birkies soon!)

we grabbed our favorite eggplant parm sandwiches at parm in soho for lunch before heading back to midtown to catch a matinee of waitress the musical on broadway.  the show was awesome and we had great seats (especially for buying them the night before)!  if you're a fan of waitress the movie, you'll love the broadway show.

after the show, we took a stroll over to sweetgreen on the east side because i have been craving a sweetgreen salad for weeks!  we took our salads to go to eat on the bus on the way home and grabbed a classic black-and-white cookie from junior's in times square too for the ride home.

all-in-all it was a great little getaway and a good reminder that we have to take some time out for ourselves once in awhile!  some pictures from saturday . . .

a trip to nyc for ryan's birthday

ryan's birthday was tuesday and we had a hard time deciding how to celebrate his birthday because the weather forecast called for rain all day long after what has felt like 40 days and 40 nights of rain.  originally, we thought about going to an amusement park, but decided to take a rain check and plan an indoor activity instead.

we decided to head to nyc for the day and were thrilled that our parents were able to join us!  we took the bus into the city and spent a majority of the day exploring the museum of natural history.  (it's hard to believe that it has been 6 years since ryan and i were last at the museum.)  we took a break from exploring for lunch at cafe lalo (which was a huge disappointment btw) and then had dinner at jacob's pickles after the museum closed (luckily our dinner experience was much, much better than lunch).  on our way back to the bus station, we popped in levain bakery to pick up cookies to take home for the birthday boy and also made a quick stop at sprinkles to pick up a cupcake for the birthday boy too.

it was a fun way to spend ryan's birthday all together in nyc.  a few pictures from the day . . .
