fun links

hip, hip, hooray for a three-day holiday weekend!  although we're working through part of it, we're still looking forward to it.  i'm keeping my fingers crossed for decent weather because the forecast for the weekend doesn't look so great at the moment.

since it's friday, here are a few fun links that i found around the internet recently . . .

1. 199 poisonous plants to look out for in order to keep yourself and your pets safe

2. this print reminds me of a certain kitten i know

3. ben & jerry’s limited batch bob marley’s one love ice cream

4. a stack of pandas, how cute

5. i want to bite into one of these jalapeno black bean burgers

6. this tropical coconut chia pudding also looks yummy

7. i'm sure leko would like if we built one of these climbing structures

8. cute free printable veggie collection

9. i wouldn't have thought of making banana bread in the crockpot

have a lovely memorial day weekend!

snapshots of life lately, according to my iphone pictures

. . . and ryan's iphone too.

a few photos of . . . leko airing himself out, ryan's view backstage while working a music concert, an ice cream date with an old friend from college, meeting a friend's new dog, flowers blooming along the side of our house, and leko posing like superman on top of a pile of pillows.

hello, hydrangea

we took a few moments on sunday when i was visiting my parents to help them pick out a spot for the hydrangea plant that we bought my mama for mother's day this year.  my dad and i planted it in a spot where my mom will see it every time she drives in their driveway.  i just love the blue color of it.

flowers in our yard

on friday after work, the sun was shining so beautifully.  as soon as i got home, i quickly grabbed my camera and headed out to our yard in order to snap a few pictures of the flowers in bloom around our house.  i'm glad i was able to get several photos while the flowers were still so gorgeous!

ice lake

on sunday, my parents and i took a little break from yard work to explore nearby ice lake since we had never been there before.  as it turned out, there were hardly any walking trails there like we had expected, but the lake was pretty nonetheless.

school's out for summer . . . well, kinda.

spring semester classes are finally over at the university where i work and the students graduate this weekend.  summer classes start right back up on monday, but there are always far fewer students on campus during the summer months as compared to the regular school year.

even though the students are on summer break and i'm not because i work year round, i enjoy the feeling of the campus emptying out at the end of the year because it is much quieter (and more parking spots are available too).  i know it takes students in order to make a university function, but i relish the less hectic summer months on campus.

as university classes come to a close, we're shifting gears in our house to another show season filled with summer concerts and summer dance recitals.  my own dance show is less than one month away which means we're all in full crazy mode.  recital costumes are starting to arrive in the mail in large boxes which is always exciting.  on wednesday, our tiniest dancers (just 3 years old) were excited to try on their costumes for their first ever main stage recital.  their costumes came with teddy bears wearing matching costumes which has to be the greatest keepsake ever from a first recital!  here's a picture i snapped of some of them in class (complete with a photo bomb by one of the little sisters who is just 1 year old and can't wait to take dance class) . . .

thank goodness it's friday because this was a particularly rough week.  i'm hoping to be able to set the imaginary "reset" button this weekend.  even though we have to work this weekend and i have several hours of dance rehearsal, i'm looking forward to a few hours carved out on saturday night to spend some super quality girl time with a dear friend who is coming into town to visit.

have a good one

summer, is that you?

the weather took a drastic turn this week.  i went from wearing a sweater yesterday morning on my way to work because it was chilly, to sweating like crazy as the car read 91 degrees in the evening on my way home from work . . . how crazy.  i'm very grateful for the warmer temperatures, but i'm not a fan of the sudden changes that shock your system.  it always takes me a little bit in order to acclimate myself (especially when you spend your nights in a sweat box - a.k.a. dance studio prepping for a recital . . . the air was so thick in there last night you could have cut it with a knife).  regardless, i'm very happy for nice weather finally and for lots of color in bloom!

the catnip king

for the past several years, ryan's mom has been making the cutest catnip toys for leko.  he positively loves them, and he plays with them so hard that he quickly wears them out.

when our families came up to our house to celebrate mother's day on sunday, ryan's mom brought along a fresh new catnip toy for leko.  it didn't take leko long to smell what was hidden in his grandma's bag!  he practically attacked her as she was getting it out of the bag to give it to him!  within a matter of seconds, he was throwing it in the air, chasing it, and pouncing on it to "kill" it!  that little guy sure loves his catnip toys.  thanks, grandma!

azaleas in bloom for mother's day

the azaleas in our yard were blooming so pretty this weekend.  on mother's day, we stepped outside between rain showers to snap a few pictures.  i love these two pictures of my parents in front of the azaleas.  it's so nice to have color back in our yard after a dreary colorless winter!

celebrating mother's day

we celebrated mother's day yesterday with our families at our house with an italian-themed lunch and the cupcake version of this strawberry dream cake for dessert.

our schedules have been so crazy the past few months and it has been awhile since we have been able to see everyone, so it was so nice to sit and visit with everyone without having to run anywhere.  we had a great time celebrating with our families!

back up in my perch in the spot light loft . . .

last night kicked off spring concert season for us with a music marathon.  we worked the lighting for the concerts of 5 different musical ensembles, all in one night.  as ryan said after we left at nearly 10pm, "we make a great lighting team" and i couldn't agree more.

i snapped this picture on my phone last night during the last act.  working two spot lights at once certainly is a workout!  here's hoping that the other concerts this week will be a little easier to light than last night's concert!

ice, ice, baby.

i know this picture is a little blurry, but i couldn't resist sharing it.  the other night ryan had a penguin-shaped ice pack out in order to ice his sore ankle after being on it all day.  ryan stood up to get something, and when he came back he found leko sprawled out on the ice pack.  leko saw ryan using the ice pack and mimicked him.  it was so cute, ryan just had to snap a quick picture on his phone.  i love leko's expression . . . you know, no big deal, an everyday occurrence.  that kitten sure loves anything wet or cold.  i'm convinced he is part penguin!

a very pippin weekend

wow, this weekend was an unbelievable whirlwind!  i've mentioned before that we are lucky to have a local theatre that pulls in many national broadway show tours throughout the year.  ryan works almost all of them through our theatre stage hands union, and lately i've been working them too.

this weekend the national tour of pippin was in town.  we both worked the load in and the load out, and ryan worked the run of the show too.  the company that orchestrates the logistics of the tours that come through our area has an educational committee that has been running several educational theatre outreach programs lately.  for this show, they arranged for two of the dancers from pippin to teach a fosse-style dance workshop.  i was thrilled that my dance studio was able to partake!

on saturday morning, we all gathered at a local university with dancers from other local studios for the workshop.  we had a little fosse boot-camp and then learned the choreography for all of "magic to do" which is the opening number of pippin.  it was so much fun, and it was great to meet and learn from two of the show's professional dancers.  once the workshop was over in the afternoon, we headed to the theatre venue where the show was being performed in order to see the matinee performance.  the show was excellent and we absolutely loved it!  (i especially enjoy getting to see the shows that we work with the union because it is so neat to see how everything we set up is used throughout the show.)  after the show was over, several of the cast remembers took time before their evening performance to do a meet-and-greet / question-and-answer session with our studio's dancers who participated in the workshop.

all in all, saturday turned out to be a great day and i'm so glad our studio got to take part in the experience.  it was so nice to expose our dancers to my theatre world too!  (they all know ryan from helping out around the dance studio, so it was cute to see how excited they got when they saw ryan on stage!  i just had to chuckle to myself.)

working the show and doing the workshop made for an exhausting weekend, but it was well worth it.  we didn't get many pictures from saturday, but we did get a few phone snapshots . . .

^we all really enjoyed learning the choreography to "magic to do" and then seeing it performed by the professionals during the show.  i'm glad the university's technical director snapped this picture on her phone of the end pose of the number during our workshop.^
^this picture is a really horrible cell phone shot, but i'm glad we have it as a memory!  our studio director took this picture at the end of the workshop with a few of our studio's dancers along side the two professional pippin cast members.^

water baby

while we were away at disney over easter weekend, one of our friends helped out by stopping in to watch leko at our house.  on one of the days when we were gone, our friend texted me this picture that she snapped on her phone of leko.  it's no secret that leko loves playing in water in both the kitchen sink and the bathtub.  he somehow convinced his babysitter to turn on the kitchen sink faucet so that he could play in the stream of water.  i didn't know if i should be proud or embarrassed that he was so bold!  we both had to laugh because he is so funny when it comes to water.  the wetter he is, the better in his opinion!

snapshots of life lately, according to my iphone pictures

a few photos of . . . leko helping ryan on his phone, a (veggie) burger date at red robin thanks to a great coupon, a gorgeous blooming tree and bright tulips outside my office window at work, finally getting around to seeing the new beauty and the beast movie this past weekend, and a mexican dinner date before a the ice hockey game last week.

in bloom outside my window

the way my desk is situated in my office at work means that my back faces the window, and unfortunately there's no other way to rearrange the furniture.  so, i need to remind myself to stand up periodically throughout the day to look out the window.  on friday, i turned around and looked out the window to find a beautifully sunny day right before lunch time.  i took a few minutes on my lunch break to peek out and enjoy all of the gorgeous tulips that were blooming right beyond my office wall.

our campus is known for beautiful tulips each spring, but they are typically all one color.  so, i was pleasantly surprised to find a mix of yellow, orange, and pink tulips in this flower bed.  they were so pretty.  i resisted the urge to bring some of them inside my office, and instead snapped a few pictures of them on my phone.
