"wake up with the arts"

on friday morning, our county arts department held their annual "wake up with the arts" event.  arts organizations in our county are invited to make a centerpiece for the tables.  two years ago, we themed our centerpiece with a children's show we had going on at the theatre.  this year, i did a fall theme so that i could reuse the fall decorations to decorate our box office.

the event was virtual last year, so we were happy to be back in person this year.  i didn't get any photos during the actual event, but i did snap one photo of the centerpiece on thursday afternoon when i set it up.  the chalkboard says: "fall in love with live theater this autumn at the theater at north!"

"wake up with the arts"

on friday, our county arts department held an event called "wake up with the arts."  it was the 11th year for the breakfast event and the second time we've attended.

any arts organization in our county was invited to go and invited to make a creative centerpiece for the tables.  we have a show called "judy moody & stink" coming up at our theatre in a few weeks, so i decided to make my centerpiece themed around the upcoming show which is a musical for children based on the famous "judy moody" book series.

i used pages from an old book to decorate the table and make paper flowers.  i also borrowed a stack of "judy moody" books from my mom's school's library too.  since it was for a round table, i made sure that there was something interesting to look at on all sides of the display.  i was really happy with how the centerpiece turned out and everyone seemed to like it!

d.i.y aromatherapy lavender rice bags

growing up, my mom always had aromatherapy rice bags and bean bags.  i remember popping them in the microwave and giving them a zap to put on sore muscles.  they always felt so good and smelled so good too.

every time ryan and i go to local craft fairs, we see vendors selling homemade aromatherapy rice bags and bean bags.  we always contemplate buying one and then decide against it because they are so darn expensive.  like broken records, we end up walking away saying "we can totally make one of those ourselves."

fast forward several years later, and we keep saying this over and over each time we go to a craft fair.  it has now become a ridiculous running joke with us whenever we see these bags.

this past weekend we had a few hours free before work in the afternoon.  i turned to ryan and said, "oh my gosh, do you know what we should do?  we should finally make one of those bags!"

out to the craft store we went to pick out fabric and pick up dried lavender flowers, followed by a stop at the grocery store for a very large bag of white rice.

we spent our sunday morning doing this project and are so thrilled with way it turned out (and how little it cost).  by no means do i think i'm an expert crafter or sewer.  i have some basic sewing skills at best, but if i can figure this out with no pattern, then anyone can do it.  here's what we did . . .

we picked out two fabrics.  we chose plain white for the inside lining and a cute pattern for the outside of the bag.  since we are so cheap, we bought fabric that was in the clearance bin.  we found two bags of dried lavender flowers at our local craft store and used 50% off coupons on them.  at the grocery store, we bought a 10 pound bag of plain white rice.

we eyeballed the fabric to see how big we wanted the bags to be.  we knew we wanted one that was a long rectangle big enough to fit across our broad shoulders.  we also wanted two smaller squares too.

we put the outside lining facing itself sandwiched between two pieces of white inside lining fabric.  we sewed all four sides, leaving a little hole in order to turn the fabric back right-side out, and cut off the excess fabric.

we turned the fabric right-side out and used a dull butter knife to push the edges out to make right angles.

we used a funnel to pour the rice into the bag through the opening that was left.

after pouring in the rice, we used the funnel to pour in the dried lavender flowers before hand sewing up the small hole.

in total, we made three bags.  the long rectangle is 20 x 8 inches.  it's long enough to drape over our shoulders, to run down the center of our backs, or to fit around our lower backs.  this bag used 5 pounds of rice and 0.4 ounces of dried lavender flowers.

the smaller square bags are 9 x 7 inches each.  they are perfect for a little body part that is sore.  each of the smaller bags used 2.5 pounds of rice and 0.2 ounces of dried lavender flowers.

all together, we made three of these aromatherapy lavender rice bags for a total cost of $12!

once they are all done, all you have to do is pop them in the microwave to heat them up.  the smell of the lavender will make your mind relax and the warm rice will help any aching body part.  (they're also great as little heating pads to keep you warm in the cold weather too!)

d.i.y. laptop sleeve

i'm really enjoying my new job so far.  since my job keeps me on my feet all the time, my employer provided me with a laptop instead of a desktop so that i could stay mobile and take it with me.  since i'm constantly moving around with my computer, i wanted a way to keep it protected while in transit.  i didn't want to lug around a bulky laptop case, so i set out looking for a thin yet protective laptop sleeve.  i searched high and low, but could not find one that fit right or didn't cost a fortune.

since i was having no luck finding what i wanted, i decided to make my own.  i did the same thing 4 years ago when i needed something to protect my ipad.

on sunday i had about an hour of free time, so i pulled out the sewing machine and any spare fabric that i had in the house.  i found a colorful floral print for the outside of the sleeve and a matching multi-colored stripe pattern print for the inside lining.  i found some leftover cotton batting from my last project too.  i followed the steps that i used when i made my ipad sleeve and adjusted the size to fit the laptop.  i had j-u-s-t enough fabric to fit the laptop.

it certainly isn't the world's greatest sewing job at all, but it was a fun little project that i was able to throw together in about an hour, and it does the trick to keep my computer protected from scratches!

d.i.y. candy-filled paper valentine heart

looking for something cute for valentine's day?  here's a simple craft using things you most likely have around your house.  a cut-out paper heart with a plastic window, filled with candy!

i made this little valentine for ryan over the weekend in just a few minutes.  (leko helped!)  it was so easy to put together and would make a cute (and super inexpensive) valentine for your special someone.

step one: gather your supplies.  for this project i used supplies that i had around the house: red paper, a plastic sandwich bag, a pencil, a hot glue gun, scissors, and candy.

step two: cut two identical hearts out of the paper.  arrange the candy on top of the one heart.

step three: cut the sandwich bag in half.  run a strip of the hot glue around the outside of the heart and place the sandwich bag on top of the heart.  press the plastic to the hot glue and trim the excess plastic with the scissors.

step four: cut out the center of the second paper heart.  run a strip of the hot glue around the outside of the heart and place the second heart on top of the plastic.  press to make sure the glue sticks.

there you have it!

happy valentine's day!

d.i.y. pine cone owl ornament

a few days ago, ryan found a great looking pine cone in our yard.  he brought it inside thinking that we could decorate with it for the holidays.  as soon as i saw it, i knew exactly what i wanted to do with it.

i got to work making a cute little pine cone owl ornament for our christmas tree, inspired by an ornament that i had seen online a few weeks ago.  i was thrilled that i didn't have to buy a single supply for this craft.  it cost me absolutely nothing to make because i just used supplies that we already had around our house.  we had leftover felt from a previous project, and we have a huge collection of miscellaneous extra buttons that have come on different pieces of clothing that we have bought over the years.  i used hot glue to hold everything together because it is so easy to work with and it dries so quickly too.

leko was a huge "help" when i was doing this craft.  he was intrigued by the pine cone, but he especially loved the string.  what is it about kitties and string?!  needless, to say, if you have kitties in your house, they will probably find this project to be fun!

step one: gather your supplies.  for this project, i used supplies that i had around the house: a pine cone from our yard, a hot glue gun, string, a pencil, scissors, buttons, and felt

step two: cut a piece of string to hold the ornament onto the tree.  tie a knot at the end to make a loop.  glue the knot to the top of the pine cone.

step three: cut two wings out of the felt and glue them to the sides of the pine cone.

step four: cut two feet out of the felt and glue them to the bottom of the pine cone.

step five: cut one piece of felt in the shape of the number 8 for the background of the eyes and cut another piece of felt in the shape of a triangle for the beak.  glue the background of the eyes onto the pine cone, and glue the beak on top of that.  glue buttons onto the felt for the eyes.  (i used 2 white buttons and 2 colored buttons for the eyes.)

there you have it!
a cute homemade ornament for the holidays!

d.i.y. pot holders

ryan's aunt sandy is really into sewing and quilting.  sandy knows that i love cooking/baking and that i have been trying to use my sewing machine more, so she recently gave me a copy of the kitchen stitches ebook.  this book is really neat since it has a ton of patterns for sewing projects for your kitchen.

for my first project out of the kitchen stitches book, i decided to make potholders.  i made one large square potholder with a little loop on the end to hang it up.  i also made two little potholders that fit over the handles of skillets.  (these will definitely come in handy when moving our cast iron skillets in and out of the oven!)

i bought the fabric and inside lining for these potholders at our local joann fabric and craft store and i was able to get all of it on sale.  (you can find joann coupons here!)  it was my first attempt, so the pot holders are far from perfect, but i'm still pretty proud of them.  it was a fun little project, and the potholders are both cute and practical for every day use.  i'm looking forward to making more projects out of the kitchen stitches book!

ps: remember when i mentioned that leko was "helping" me to sew a few weeks ago?  this was the project that i was working on at the time.  leko sure loves to pull the thread out of the sewing machine whenever i try to use it!  silly kitten  :-)

d.i.y. hello apparel sweatshirt

there are a ton of cute graphic print sweatshirts for sale on the internet these days.  however, most of them are crazy expensive.  for example, i love this green sweatshirt from hello apparel . . . but it is $50!  i know it's cute and all, but at that price you have got to be kidding me.  that's entirely too much money for a sweatshirt.

since i'm not willing to shell out fifty buckaroos on the real deal, i decided to make my own.  you may remember that i shared a tutorial last march for how to make your own graphic print sweatshirt.  i followed those same steps and made my own hello apparel sweatshirt!

this project was fun to do, and cost just a fraction of the price of the real one.  i bought a sweater on clearance at target for only $2.24 and i used all of the same supplies that i had leftover from when i made my happy camper sweatshirt last year.

you can't beat an inexpensive and fun project!

 ^just $2.24 for this sweatshirt!  i couldn't believe it!^
^i drew the design on freezer paper with a pencil^
^then i used an exacto knife to cut out the letters^
^i ironed the freezer paper onto the sweatshirt^
^first coat of paint^
^second coat of paint^
^i let the paint dry overnight, then i peeled off the freezer paper^
^voila!^
there you have it!
super simple and super cute!
